Greetings SOM faculty, students, staff, and friends! I would like to introduce to you the UMMC School of Medicine Class of 2028. Joining us in August will be a talented, interesting, and excited group of first-year medical students. Demondes Haynes, MD, provides details about the class.

GME Welcomes New Residents and Fellows

The end of June always brings the bittersweet graduation of many of our institution’s residents and fellows. Some will stay here as fellows or faculty, some will leave the institution, but as they complete their training we wish them well. John Ingram, MD, gives an overview of new residents and fellows who began July 1.

Grading Improvements in Canvas

Grading is always a tedious task for faculty. Canvas has made several changes to Gradebook and SpeedGrader functionality to improve the grading process while creating a more streamlined option for providing feedback. Let’s take a look at some of these enhancements.

Savvy Strategies: Getting Active!

Active learning is a strategy that helps move information from our short-term memory to our long-term memory because it uses multiple mediums to gain and retain knowledge. A popular active learning strategy in the educational realm is a flipped classroom where introductory information is given to students prior to the class session, and the class session is used as a collaborative or problem-solving session based on the material given. Brittany Ricker explains more about active learning.

Room reservations for the School of Medicine and other locations at the Jackson UMMC campus can now be made through CourseDog.

2024 Annual Town Hall Meeting

The School of Medicine (SOM) annual town hall meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday, August 21, at 4:00 pm. Dr. Loretta Jackson-Williams, Vice Dean for Medical Education, will provide reflections of the 2023-24 academic year and highlight school priorities for this academic year.
